No capacity offered on the DE-D2 and D2-DE interconnectors for August 2018

On the DE-D2 and D2-DE borders, no capacity will be offered in the monthly auction for August 2018.

On the KONTEK connection*, forming the border between DE and DK2, an oil-leakage on the German land cable section was detected at the end of April. For technical and environmental safety reasons, the defective cable part needs to be repaired as soon as possible. In preparation for these works, in particular in order to detect the exact location of the oil-leakage and to assess the exact scope of the necessary repair works, the KONTEK connection had to be, and was switched off at the beginning of May and from middle of May until beginning of July. Immediately after Energinet and 50Hertz have decided on the exact timing of the repair works, at present anticipated to be from 13 August 2018, 00:00 to 9 September 2018, 23:59 hrs, the exact timing will be announced to the market.

That given, offering monthly capacities on the DE-D2 and/or D2-DE borders in the monthly auction for August 2018 would mean that Energinet and 50Hertz would most likely have to curtail these capacities while the KONTEK connection is out of operation for the execution of the repair works. Such curtailments are not in the interest of neither the market participants nor Energinet and 50Hertz, and therefore, Energinet and 50 Hertz have decided to offer nil capacities on the DE-D2 and/or D2-DE borders in the monthly auction for August 2018. Instead, all capacities, remaining on these borders unused after the nomination deadline for the physical transmission rights allocated on the DE-D2 and D2-DE borders in the Yearly Auction for 2018, will be made available to the market on a daily basis.

*KONTEK connection is a 170-kilometre long, monopolar 400 kV high-voltage direct current cable between Eastern Denmark (Bjæverskov) and Germany (Bentwisch) with a transfer capacity of 600 MW. The KONTEK connection is jointly operated by Energinet and 50Hertz. The cable of the KONTEK connection was manufactured by NKT. The land cable sections of the KONTEK connection are implemented as a 'two core flat oil-filled cable'. For better monitoring of the oil, the land cable sections are divided in sections of approx. 8 km which are separated by oil-impermeable sockets from each other.
