Important Brexit information – Registration with EU regulatory authority

Published:

Dear Market Participant,

As the transition period after Brexit comes to an end this year, we would like to draw your attention to the below information:

Market participants that are currently registered with a National Regulator in the UK (NIAUR or Ofgem) need to register with an EU regulatory authority to avoid a disruption to cross-border trade, trade within EU wholesale energy markets, or trade within the Single Electricity Market. Ofgem issued an open letter on 27 September 2019 (https://www.ofgem.gov.uk/publications-and-updates/no-deal-eu-exit-remit-contingency-arrangements-september-update) outlining steps to take for market participants in Great Britain. The process of re-registration in the EU is controlled by the EU’s Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators (ACER). ACER published guidance on re-registration on 8 January 2019 (https://documents.acer-remit.eu/acer-staff-letters/open-letter-on-the-withdrawal-of-uk-from-eu/).

A detailed guide about electricity trading from 1st January 2021 is available on the UK government portal: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/trading-electricity-if-theres-no-brexit-deal/trading-electricity-if-theres-no-brexit-deal
